  43.         This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  44.         Microsoft Windows 95.
  45.  
  46.         The drivers support 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in all
  47.         resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.

  95. 3.      Installation
  96.  
  97.         This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  98.         Display Driver for Windows 95.
  99.  
  100.         To install the drivers, start the program SETUP.EXE in this
  101.         directory. The installation assistant will help you to install
  102.         the driver with the control panel.
  103.  
  104. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  105.  
  106.         - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  107.           older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  108.         - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  109.           Information Database.
  110.         - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.
  111.

  113. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  114.  
  115.         First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  116.         WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  117.         install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  118.  
  119.         The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  120.         the Windows desktop.
  121.  
  122.         - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  123.           mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  124.         - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  125.         - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  126.           Display Type" will pop up.
  127.         - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  128.           You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  129.         - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and change to
  130.           the WIN95 directory on the ELSAware CD for your WINNER board.
  131.         - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  132.           and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  133.         - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  134.           "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  135.         - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  136.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  137.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  138.           driver.
  139.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  140.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  141.           you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  142.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  143.           Boards.
  144.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  145.           now".
  146.  
  147.         Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  148.         now".
  149.  
  150.         In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  151.         without rebooting your system.

  265. 5.      Release notes

  267. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  268.  
  269.         The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  270.         file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  271.         mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  272.         distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  273.  
  274.         The following table shows the meaning of this entries:

  276.         Section [Settings]

  278.         CursorFG/CursorBK
  279.         ColorCursor
  280.  
  281.                 With this two entries you can change the color of the
  282.                 hardware cursor. The format is:
  283.                         CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  284.                 at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  285.                 the range 00 to FF of the base color components.
  286.                 You must specify ColorCursor=1 to make this working!
  287.  
  288.         RefreshRate
  289.                 no longer supported!
  290.  
  291.         TI-Snow
  292.                 Set this value to 1, if the screen flickers around the
  293.                 cursor shape while changing the pattern.
  294.                 This switch works only on WINNER 2000PRO/X, -AVI and
  295.                 GLoria.

  298.                 Setting this value to 0, the bitmap- cache will be

  306.         Section [Hardware]
  307.  
  308.         CursorType
  309.  
  310.                 In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  311.                 graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  312.                 this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  313.                 by inserting the line
  314.                         CursorType=SW
  315.                 in your ELSA.INI file.
  316.                 This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  317.  
  318.         Video-RAM base address and size
  319.  
  320.                 Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  321.                 your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  322.                 segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  323.                 On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  324.                 into the host address space. This increases the
  325.                 performance of multimedia applications.
  326.                 For example, insert the line
  327.                         VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  328.                 to map the video RAM at the physical address
  329.                 A00000000h.
  330.                 Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  331.                 main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  332.                 size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  333.                 graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  334.                 your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  335.                 PCI 4GB.
  336.                 If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  337.                 VRAM-Size entry:
  338.                   for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  339.                       WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  340.                         VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  341.                   and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  342.                   the size of the video memory in bytes.

  345. 5.2.    DirectDraw support
  346.  
  347.         The display drivers do support DirectDraw, but to use it in an
  348.         application, you must install DirectDraw. The Microsoft
  349.         DirectDraw components are not included in the standard retail
  350.         version of Windows 95.
  351.  
  352.         To install DirectDraw start the program DXSETUP ind the
  353.         directory \ELSAWARE\DDRAW\DIRECTX on the ELSA CD
  354.  
  355.  
  356.  
  357. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  358.  
  359. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  360.  
  361.         This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  362.         hints on work arounds.
  363.  
  364.  
  365. 6.1     Videomode not available
  366.  
  367.         Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  368.         display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  369.         indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  370.         a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  371.         notification message.
  372.  
  373.  
  374. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  375.  
  376.         On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  377.         32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  378.         very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.
  379.  
  380.  
  381. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  382.  
  383.         Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  384.         a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  385.         cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  386.  
  387.         - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  388.           driver for Windows 95.
  389.         - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  390.           In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  391.           Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  392.           resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  393.  
  394.         or:
  395.         - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  396.           the mouse track.
  397.  
  398.         Hints:
  399.         When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  400.         board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  401.         active.
  402.         With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  403.         drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  404.         the entry "ELSA AG Aachen (Germany)".
  405.  
  406.  
  407. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  408.  
  409.         This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  410.         868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  411.         only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  412.         in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  413.                 VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  414.                 VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  415.  
  416.  
  417. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  418.  
  419.         Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  420.         (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  421.         switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  422.         color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  423.         "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".
  424.  
  425. 6.6     Unknown and PnP-monitors
  426.  
  427.         If you don't have selected a Monitor or you have a PnP (DDC1)
  428.         Monitor, in all graphics modes the default refresh rate is
  429.         60Hz. The DDC case is becaus a bug in Windows DDC support
  430.         You can change to a higher refresh rate with the control panel
  431.         extemsion WINman. WINman, unlike Windows, can evaluate the
  432.         monitor information provaided by DDC exact.
  433.  
  434. 6.7     Cursor corruption
  435.  
  436.         If you see some "snow" araound the cursor shape while changing
  437.         the pattern, insert the line
  438.                 TI-Snow=1
  439.         in the section [Settings] of your ELSA.INI file.
  440.         ! This fix slows down the performance of the cursor changing
  441.         ! operations !
  442.  
  443. 6.8     LapLink 7.5 and Remote Control
  444.  
  445.         To use the feature Remote Control, the usage of device bitmaps
  446.         must be disabled. Insert the line DeviceBitmaps=0 in the
  447.         section [Settings] of the file ELSA.INI.
